video editing software

Up to now, I've used windows movie maker, but it's suddenly decided it doesn't like the videos from my phone (despite using them before) I was wondering if anyone knew of a decent software, preferably freeware, that I could get a hold of easily. Long as it deals with mp4s i'm happy, any decent effects are a bonus, particularly being able to overlay videos with text.

i have literally no money, and even were that not the case, i wouldn't get a mac if my life depended on it, plus there're usually windows patches for those sort of things.

There are a couple of good free open source video editing packages these days.  As far as i know they only run on linux. Pitivi is a super basic editor but if you're just cutting clips together and adding titles it's all you need.  You can get it by running a live CD of ubuntu.  if you want something more powerful KdenLive is another tool with more powerful features.  Its also available as a live cd or you can install it if you want to dive in and install linux on your machine.

thanks, i've actually found something that's doing ok now - Avitricks classic - i had to get a converter as well, but but i'm just learning how to use some of the functions at the mo.
