Title: Capital Bocking 2012
Post by: Locky on March 24, 2012, 12:41:24 PM
Assuming everyone is fine to return to cardiff this year, I'm trying to get confirmed dates and as you know this is usually impossible with cardiff council saying no to every/any date.

Fortunately this year Cardiff is hosting a few olympic football matches and as a result, virtually all other events in the city are not taking place until the olympics is done.

This is by no means definite yet but is everyone happy with August 11th and/or 12th?

12th is great for me, 11 not so good but do-able just, (night shift on the 10th  :Cconfused:)
I'm sure I can round up a few NEWCs for this.
Ooo a weekend camp   that could be fun.

It's actually looking more like the weekend after. August 18th and 19th.

Cardiff council have a proposed olympics closing ceremony event in the basin on the 12th. I have doubts whether it will actually happen though.

I've never been to Cardiff (or anywhere else in the UK for that matter ;) ) and who knows: maybe come august I'll be confident enough on my bocks to start showing off, lol!

May be a nice idea for a short holiday, so I'm keeping my eye on this thread...

Cheers!

18th and 19th Greg. Cardiff Council are playing hardball but all I can do is hope they do not have anything else scheduled that weekend for the oval basin.

I've created a facebook page simply because it reaches more people in a quicker time than the forum. I will still post information and details here so no worries.

The facebook page also has lots of pics and videos from previous Capital Bocking events

and a twitter account: @capitalbocking

CB is slowly creeping up on us. I don't know how many are coming but is there any interest in organising a camp site this year? I've got a contact who can let us have a scouting camp site if it's still available, and only 10 mins drive from the bay.

We have a film production company wanting to come and film the event. It's not for TV and I cant really say much more than that until its confirmed.

I was also thinking of maybe doing a proper bocking flashmob in the city centre, starting with one lonely bocker who genuinely is not aware of CB or that there are lots of other bockers about to jump out and join him. What do you think?

Yeh campsite needed. the only possible way we can get down is straight off night shift on the Sat morning, Bock all day then must sleep before returning to Gog Sunday afternoon, after another bock of course.

Yes it is the 18th and 19th.

There is still a chance I might be able to get us our own campsite but it's not looking good. I will keep trying and let you know asap.

If I cant get one then its gonna be a case of everyone booking a pitch at the only campsite in cardiff. I'll post details on this but its  a small place with only about 30 pitches.

Hi Locky

Any news on the camping front mate as if we can't get our own ground it might be worth getting booked in early to the small one so we can monopolise it  :Claugh:

Title: Re: Capital Bocking 2012
Post by: Locky on July 21, 2012, 11:59:02 AM
Less than a month to go and I still have no real idea who is coming lol.

No joy with organised campsite I'm afraid so I would advise booking at cardiff caravan park (http://www.cardiff.gov.uk/content.asp?nav=2%2C2868%2C4407%2C4410). I dont know anything about the 2 sites billy has posted up but I think it would be great if everyone who is camping was at the same campsite. Both of those are a good 20-30 mins drive from the bay but it's a very easy drive.

Anyone looking at hotels, the Cardiff bay travelodge (http://www.travelodge.co.uk/hotels/380/Cardiff-Atlantic-Wharf-hotel) is within 5 mins WALKING distance of the bay. I know the EA's have previously stayed at the Etap hotel (http://www.etaphotel.com/gb/hotel-6175-etap-hotel-cardiff-centre-soon-ibis-budget/index.shtml) due to its luxurious and spacey rooms (SARCASM ALERT!) but thats within 5 mins driving.

I'd love everyone to come for the 2 days, looks like the good weather is on its way and cardiff city will be recovering from olympic crap thats going on so we should have the place to ourselves. I'll look at getting a crash mat down the bay too :)
Title: Re: Capital Bocking 2012
Post by: Jason on July 21, 2012, 07:22:28 PM
Well I must say I am easy but if the one you suggest is closer that would obviously be better if they have enough spaces

So lets hear from all who are camping then we can figure out how many pitches we need and if they have that many available for the saturday night

How many want to camp

And yes it was me Billy and I have got the downhill bit (most of the time  :Claugh:) but can't go uphill yet
They are good fun and worth a try as they can be had for £20ish on e-bay (if you don't mind the odd fall  )

Title: Re: Capital Bocking 2012
Post by: billymaya on July 21, 2012, 10:00:08 PM
yeah im alright down hill but the self propelling movement is evading me some what im slowly getting better though fall?..........fall? lol yes you could say that ive been out today on them and fallen twice one i nearly twisted me ankle the other i landed on my elbow again and recut open my arm grrrrr lol i know me and kieran maya and anthony are up for a camp not sure about the other risers who are coming up with us
Title: Re: Capital Bocking 2012
Post by: Jason on July 23, 2012, 06:47:59 PM
:Claugh: That sound familiar Billy  :Claugh:

I had one fall that left me unable to walk for 10 mins  but slowly improving

As for the camping I don't know how you feel about it but the one Locky sugests seems to be closest but the pricing is a bit confusing

It seems that you can put a tent up and park your car for £22 a night or just a tent with no car for £9
So in theory Clive the 2 girls and me would need 3 tents and one car but not sure if it works that way
Both of yours seem cheaper but a fair way off

What do you think mate

Jason
Title: Re: Capital Bocking 2012
Post by: billymaya on July 23, 2012, 06:57:19 PM
im thinking the one closer would be best depending on if they are fully booked or not. we would be one tent one van so lol not unless i park it some where else and then only pay for the tent after walking it in lol we are happy to go where ever you guys are going sure it would be alot more fun to have some extra company :D
Title: Re: Capital Bocking 2012
Post by: Jason on July 23, 2012, 09:13:32 PM
Agreed mate we can have a Barby on the saturday night

I shall get Clive in on this discussion and if he agrees we can all have a go at booking

Might even be somewhere on site we can have a Driftskate comp  :Claugh: Full armour and crash hats compulsory

Jason  :Hoofies2: :CGEEK:

agreed the campsite in the middle of cardiff is the best idea and bbq sounds brilliant :D im just ordering some new wrist guards and elbow and knee pads as we speak lol went over the park earlier and i think at last im getting the movement right :D

Just had a chat with Clive and it looks like we will be camping friday and saturday (Saves any early mornings  :Claugh: )

Just to check it is friday the 17th and saturday the 18th of august  :Claugh: I would hate to book the wrong days

I'm gonna have a go at booking tomorrow Billy but I will ask if they have a few spaces before I book (don't want to get the last ones )

So it looks like 2 nights of barbys

I have no idea. The NEWC's and the EA's have said they are going, plus you lot so we should have a few.
Actually by the sounds of it, it could well be the same crowd as last year. It's weird, I was saying the other day in the bay that it feels like we're the only bockers who are still bocking :/
Title: Re: Capital Bocking 2012
Post by: Jason on July 26, 2012, 05:48:21 PM
Ok Folks

I booked into the camp site today at the one Locky suggested  here

http://www.cardiff.gov.uk/content.asp?nav=2%2C2868%2C4407%2C4410

Very easy and it only cost only about £25 for the 2 days for 2 tents and a car  (actually it seemed too cheap so I'm gonna double check tomorrow that they took for both days so assume that is for a night)

She did mention £9 per night for a tent and £14 for a car and tent so it is probably for one night

The young lady said she had a few spaces left so get booking and we will see you all there for the Barby

Excellent. Just to say for those camping with cars, if it helps you out then dont pay for the car. I'm sure they will still let you drive in to pitch up and I really don't think on-street parking is a massive problem in the area.

That said, if you're keep valuables in your car then obviously its worth paying to have the car next to you :)

The campsite itself backs on to some massive playing fields and a decent kids park is 5 mins away. There is a pub a few mins walk away which is really nice called the Mochyn Du where they serve good food and welcome kids: http://www.cardiffpubs.co.uk/Pub.php?Pub=MochynDu

Next to the pub is a big sports centre but being the flagship sports centre of the welsh sports council, its not viable for us to use for a gym session. Shame really. The campsite is about 15-20 mins walk from the city centre and on several major bus routes. It's a good place, just a bit small for a campsite.

Post by: billymaya on July 27, 2012, 10:56:27 AM
Right  :Cwink: camping all booked :D 2 nights 17th and the 18th of august cant wait looking forward to it :) jason you prob have only paid for the one night  they require that for the deposit on the first night so second night we will have to pay when we are there its £44 for two nights which isnt bad is it
Title: Re: Capital Bocking 2012
Post by: Jason on July 27, 2012, 08:48:05 PM
Sounds about right Billy

I now have a dilemma on my hands

Locky mentioned a pub that does good food (yes) but he also said they welcome children (did that mean us or the type that run around screaming and annoying people  :Claugh:) yep before anyone else says it whats the difference  the difference is I don't annoy me  :Claugh:

Now would this be pub grub one night and Barby the other or two barbys with lots of beer or if the pubs that good two pub nights (see what I mean by dilemma  :Claugh: )

Also do we use disposable Barbys and Gas ourselves or get a real one and set fire to ourselves  :Claugh:

Think this is gonna be fun folks

Jason  :Hoofies2: :CGEEK:

lol now its funny you should mention this as i had exactly the same though today myself ;) we have a couple of lads and lasses who wont be 18 but they could come and have a coke or two and they are pretty well behaved :) worse comes to the worst i can get kieran to baby sit whilst we go pub pmsl.

one night at the pub sounds good with grub then bbq the saturday or vice versa i have a bbq that i can bring with me its quite cool kind of a tripod set up where the grill hangs from a chain above the main dish also doubles as a great fire pit afterwards ;) i suggest we by the food at a local super market we can all chip in a bit be alot cheaper and easier dont you think :D

jason can you messege me your mobile number so i can ring you when we get there ill send ypou my number also :D gonna be a cracking weekend really looking forward to it :D

Just building a couple of different design alcohol stoves to boil the tea on  :Claugh: (Yep guys bring a fire extinguisher someone  :Claugh:)

Look up "Soda can stoves" online and se what I mean (this is almost as much fun as bocking and a lot more dangerous ) only had 2 explode so far (only built 4 though  :Claugh: )

Still a bit undecided what to do here.  The camp site is about 45 mins walk from the Bay yes?

Is the plan just to meet up in the Bay on the Sat am?

Jason / Clive, I know you guys are camping Friday night too, but I will just be coming down Sat am I think and staying Sat night.
Title: Re: Capital Bocking 2012
Post by: billymaya on August 01, 2012, 02:27:44 PM
as i understand it mate i think the camp site is only a mile and a half from the bay so should only take 10 mins to get there from the camp site yes i think everyones meeting at the bay on sat morning dont know what time though
Title: Re: Capital Bocking 2012
Post by: Locky on August 01, 2012, 05:08:08 PM
It's 2.5 miles and google says 49 mins on foot.

My own opinion is it's not really walkable, especially if you are carrying something like stilts.
It's quite easy to get the bus to/from the campsite. An all day adult ticket is £3.40 but I you would need to change buses along the way.

Saying that we've got a 15 seat minibus so doing 2-3 trips shouldnt be a problem :)
Sheepy makes a great driver.

The plan is to meet around 11am on the Saturday. It usually fizzles out around 4 or 5pm and those who are camping head to the campsite and we do the same on Sunday though I expect Sunday to be the quiet one.

2.5 miles piffle why carry the bocks when you can walk on them

Jason,

I may see you there.  I'm gonna leave the camp site until I arrive (see what the weather like).  I've spoken to them and they say they can squeeze me in on the day as I'm only a little one.

 :Ceek:

It's only 1 hr qtr drive for me from home, so if the weather is crap I can join in the pub meal and then drive home.

Billy, my tent's living area is about the size of a gazebo, and if needs be, we take down the bedroom compartments while not in use and there you have it, a huge dome like gazebo, can fit about 15 people in a circle that way. Had about 14 of us in the singing songs while p**sed at Volksfest. So all will be good. I reckon we could manage about 20 of us in there.

Actually guys I think you would have really liked the Sunday, much better weather and we got pretty much everyone doing some real bocking. My pics are on the facebook page which should be public.
I got a couple of vids of jake and greg today on the steps including jake doing a backflip 720 (thats a backflip with two full twists). Not sure if that's even been done before but man what a day.
Thanks to everyone who made it what it was 8)

I'm not against having it in Cardiff, but it would really want it re-surfaced  as its in a terrible state. I think we got lucky with the weather as well. Sunday was a great day and few got sun burnt. If it was throwing it down with rain it would have been a different story.

Locky lets admit it mate

You have the best Bocking venue in the known world on your doorstep mate  :Claugh: (even with the surface as it is )

There I've said it and it hurt  :Claugh: (why do you think I am moving to Wales as soon as I can mate )

If you hold it they will come

Maybe we should change it to Cardiff Bocking

I for one want to come visit you for a weekend at least once a year gutted I missed Sunday it looks like you had so much fun but next year I'm there

I was pretty astounded at the state of the Basin surface, even compared to 16 months ago it looks and feels awful. Having said that, it's still my favourite place in the UK for bocking.

You say that Jason, but I warn you - You will become addicted if you start that. My visits to Wales went from once every 3 months, to every 2, to once a month, to the point where Locky had to put up with me living in his house for 2 weeks (And I think Carl came to stay for a few days too) :Claugh:

You know I agree there are few places in the UK that rival cardiff bay for bocking however, I still feel not a lot of bocking takes place at CB. I mean sure the EA's had fun on both the conrete and wooden steps and some of our guys did too but on the whole I dont think people look around and think ok what I could learn to do today.

It's not a bad thing, many of us are old friends and its great to chill and chat and have a laugh but when I see things like Hannah (mini ellis) learning to vault, Jason and Clive jumping on the dock wall I think THATS what CB should be about.
Seriously with the amount of steps of all shapes and sizes, hand rails, blocks and even the giant pebbles which nobody visited this year - there is a lot that I think any bocker could come along and push themselves and learn something new.

When we talk about the possibility of other venues around the country we always look for obstacles and things to do for us but do we really need that?
I think people would learn more coming to cardiff in a smaller group and actually bock, just like sprog mentioned though I wouldnt count on staying at my house for 2 weeks!

Not your fault Clive so no appology needed mate

I do agree that I for one didn't make as much use of the obsticals as I would have liked to Locky
I had that awful cold a couple of weeks before and lost all my fittness so get knackered very quick at the moment (can't believe how much it has affected me )
But next time I am gonna push myself and get a few new tricks under my belt

I recon a good google earth of London is called for to try and find some good places that we can use
